Throwback Thursday: Baby’s Tummy Time

It’s that time of the week again. What time you ask? It’s my Throwback Thursday. It’s the day I find an old picture of me, well actually its not that old since I’m only 18 months old, but it’s a younger version of me. I show you a picture and tell you a bit about how old I was and what I was doing and if there are tips to be had I will share them with you. Well actually mommy will share them with you. I’m still trying to figure out what tips really mean. I thought it was something that we gave to our pizza guy when he brings us pizza but I found out that it means that we tell you some awesome stuff as well.

This picture was taken when I was 5 months old. This was when I wasn’t quite mobile and mommy didn’t have to worry about me running around everywhere. This was when I was the “good baby” and not the little daredevil she calls me now. What a difference being able to walk makes.

So what do I talk about today. How about Tummy Time? I’m sure you figured it out already anyway because of my post title. I told you my writer needs to be fired. You weren’t supposed to know until you got here. Silly mommy!

So why is Tummy Time important for your baby? After all its encouraged that babies sleep on their backs. Well having tummy time is important for your baby’s motor development and lays the foundation for your baby crawling then walking. Encouraging your baby to spend time on her tummy can help her reach her developmental milestones.

I admit that I hated it when it was done when I was younger but it’s recommended that your baby spend at least 30 minutes of tummy time each day.

So how can you encourage your baby to enjoy it? Well here’s where the tips that I was talking about comes in.

Lay down and play with your baby, get down on their level. This will not only let them know that you are there for them but calm down any anxiety they have as well.

You can also purchase an activity mat. They are usually bright in color and come with mirrors and toys that grabs your baby’s attention. The mirrors are an excellent way to strengthen your babys’ neck muscle since your baby usually try to lift her head to get a look at herself in the mirror. The music as well helps in that regard since baby usually turn their head to listen to the music as well. The toys, mirrors also assist in your baby’s brain and sensory development.

Tummy Time should when done on the floor should always be supervised. Never leave your baby unattended.

Tummy Time doesn’t always have to be on the floor. You can lay baby across your lap and they will love that as well.

Whether you do decide to do Tummy Time or not your baby will still develop normally but it is encouraged.

So did you do Tummy Time with your little one and did they enjoy it?
